ACP Seeks to Renegotiate EPA Deal

Members of the African, Caribbean and Pacific group of countries have agreed to seek to renegotiate the controversial Economic Partnership Agreement with Europe.
Leaders of the ACP made the resolution following the conclusion of a two-day summit in Ghana on Friday.
Incoming ACP chairman, President John Kufuor of Ghana, told reporters that it had been decided `to dispatch a troika to Europe to review the EPAs so that they will reflect the mood of the strategic partnership we see with Europe.`
The leaders want ties `that will leave less of an impression of continuing dependence of the ACP on Europe,` Kufour said.
The pacts proposed by the EU are meant to replace existing trade deals giving European countries preferential market access to former colonies.
