Lawyers for an Orlando man eligible for public assistance are asking a federal judge today to block a new state law requiring welfare applicants to take a drug test.
The plaintiff is Luis Lebron, a 35-year-old Navy veteran, father and student at the University of Central Florida, who claims the drug testing requirement violates his Fourth Amendment protection from unreasonable searches.
Since July 1, applicants for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families have had to submit a drug test.
Lebron is the lead plaintiff in a class-action suit, spearheaded by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The case is before U.S. District Judge Mary Scriven, who has no time table for a ruling.
I wish they would drug test applicants here in the uk, why should our taxes/nhs pay for someones drug addiction.
