A Heartbroken Family Pleads for Help

A heartbroken family of a Texas teen, gunned down as he left an Orlando night club early Friday morning, pleaded for information on his killer at a press conference on Saturday.

The Cannon Family weeps at a press conference on June 16, 2012, as they plead for information on the killer of Dino Cannon who was  fatally shot as he left Club Limelite on 367 North Orange Avenue, on Friday, June 15, 2012. (Photo: WONO)

A tearful Daphne Cannon, mother of 18-year-old Dino Cannon, implored the public to come forward with any information on her son’s killer. Dino Cannon was shot and killed as he left Club Limelite on 367 North Orange Avenue around 2:30 a.m., on Friday.

“I came here with my child and I am leaving without him,” a weeping Cannon said. She described her son as a good child and one who professed his faith in God.

“He was a good child. I don’t know who took his life and I don’t understand why,” she said. “But I am asking if you would please, please give us some information so that we might find this person. We need some closure.”

Orlando police believe Dino and the shooter argued inside the Club, before the suspect was escorted out of the Club. Detectives also say, the shooter waited outside until the Club closed and shot and killed Dino in a nearby alley.

The last of five children, Daphne Cannon described her only son as an “awesome guy and clean.”

“He was the kind of child that when I came home from work he would come and bring my shoes,” she said. “And even if I didn’t want shoes he would put them on, put a cover on me and make sure I was okay.”

Dino, along with his parents and four sisters, had come to Orlando to celebrate his graduation. He had just gone to his first prom and the family recently learned he would likely receive a scholarship to attend college. Cannon said her son grew up playing basketball and football and his father was his coach. But he was more than an athlete, his mother said.

“I need you to know that Dino was not only an athlete,” said Cannon, “But he was a talented and gifted student. He was a Texas scholar, he was an usher in the church, he sang in the youth choir and he had already finished his first year in college – he had 36 hours of college credits already done.”

Like his mother, Dino’s father, also named Dino Cannon, pleaded for information on his son’s killer. “As a father, as a friend, if you have any pictures, any video just send the stuff to the police so they can catch this guy,” he said.

Lead Orlando Police Detective Marie Verrett who also addressed the press conference said, several people witnessed the shooting.

“We encourage you to please think of your own family members and what the Cannon family is going through,” said Verrett. “And please come forward.”

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call the Orlando Police Department or Crimeline at # 1-800-423-TIPS.  Callers may be eligible for a reward up to $5,000.

  1. This is so horrible. These kids just don’t value human life at all. Incidents like this are heartbreaking on so many levels. My prayers go out to the family and friends of Dino Cannon.

  2. Dino We Miss You Here In Killeen. Someone In Orlando Took You From Us And Our Hearts Broken. R.I.P We Love You

  3. My son knew Dino and he is devastated over this senseless act. Shame on those who refuse to cooperate with police. Where’s the outrage that a young beautiful, positive young black male is killed by another black male? Why aren’t we seeing protesting with the likes of George Zimmerman? Why are blacks allowed to kill each other and know one from the black community is demanding justice? Every African American leader in the Greater Orlando are should be ashamed of themselves for remaining silent while the Cannon family suffers during this life changing event.

  4. Keith Holder you are right, it is a shame. We have no real leaders. Again, they will all wait until there is some kind of consensus that everyone can agree on. This consensus will have no real effect except to calm the nerve endings for awhile, then disappear. One person can make a difference. Just do what you can do. Join the PTA or some other group and become active. You will be surprised at what one person can accomplish.

I feel so sorry for this family. This is just another senseless death in our community. Maybe this tragedy added to the Champion’s and Martin’s tragedies will shine a light on the many deaths that goes on unnoticed in our community. Maybe, just maybe some good will come from this.

  5. I grew up with Daphne-same schools, same church, sang in the same choir at church, even roomed together on one of our church outings. I am in total shock! I am also angry! It never crossed my mind before how all the attention is given to “other” crimes. Rev Al, Rev Jessie, where are you on this one?? The stinking, rotten, coward who did this will pay sooner or later and I pray to God it is SOONER. Lord, please give my friends the strength to get through tomorrow and the days ahead.
