The oldest prisoner on Florida’s death row has died, but not of actual execution; rather, Gary Alvord, who had been on death row for 40 years, died of old age Sunday.

Myfoxorlando reports that for almost 40 years, Alvord waited out a death sentence he received for the 1973 murders of 3 women in Tampa.

The reason he was never executed: mental illness.
