According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 15 percent of Orange County residents (or about 200,000 people) live below the poverty line. To help lower that rate, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area is seeking fundraising teams to support “National Women Build Week,” a volunteer-driven event designed to empower women to take action against poverty-level housing conditions. With the goal of raising $150,000 – the cost to build two Habitat homes – the weeklong build runs from May 6 to 11 at the nonprofit’s multifamily community, Stag Horn Villas, located at 4650 Stag Horn Drive in Orlando.
“Right now, we need sponsors and fundraising teams to ensure the success of Women Build Week,” said Dee Danmeyer, president of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Orlando Area. “Anyone interested in contributing can start a team or donate to one that’s already formed.”
Fundraising for Women Build Week is spearheaded by the steering committee. Led by Honorary Committee Chair Carolyn Fennell, director of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, steering members include: Committee Chair Caroline C. Hardin, GE Capital Corporation; Penny Jones, Florida Hospital; Karen Riggle, Consulate Health Care; Jennifer Abel, Nautique Events; Kim Hazelton, TD Bank; and Bonnie Hill, SunTrust Investment Services, Inc.
“Owning a home is important as a symbol that provides safety, security, comfort and most of all achievement, particularly for women,” said Fennell.
Danmeyer added: “Across the nation, more than 12 million children – that’s one in six – live in low income housing. With such a high need, it’s critical that we come together to help lower that number – and I’m proud to support the 9,000 women nationwide who raise funds and volunteer to build homes during National Women Build Week.”
