“Build Your Bones” Educational Series

The Lake County Extension is inviting residents to an upcoming three-part educational series entitled, “Build Your Bones.” The series will take place on Thursday, Jan. 17, 24 and 31 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Lake County Agricultural Center, located at 1951 Woodlea Road in Tavares.

The program will be presented by Julie England, an extension agent with University of Florida/IFAS Lake County Extension, and will encourage participants to take action to improve or maintain their bone health. Each week’s session will focus on different steps to improve bone health, increase balance and reduce fracture risk.

“Women and men of all ages and ethnicities can be affected by poor bone health,“ said England. “Low bone density increases the risk for bone fractures, and people often do not know they have weakened bones until a fracture occurs.”

The National Osteoporosis Foundation reports that over 45 million American men and women are affected by either osteoporosis or low bone density. Fractures may affect any bone but are most common in the spine, hip and back.

Participants should plan on attending all three parts of the series. Pre-registration is required by Jan. 15, and there is a $7 materials fee. Register can be completed online at http://bonehealth2013.eventbrite.com, or by calling 352-343-4101 extension 2719.
