Interrupted a few times by applause and cheers, President Obama said Monday that a deal to avoid going over the fiscal cliff is in sight, although no agreement had yet been reached.
Speaking from the White House and in front of a group of Middle Class people on New Year’s Eve, Mr. Obama also jabbed at Congress several times, pointing out that they would wait for the last second before striking a deal.
Going forward, the president said that with regard to expenditure cuts which are yet to be agreed upon, he will continue to insist that this is done in a fair and balance way.
Mr. Obama needled the Republicans on several occasions, noting that it was only recently they had insisted that taxes won’t be raised. However, any agreement will contain tax increases on the wealthy, although it remains unclear where the threshold for higher taxes will be.
