Trayvon Martin: Walking While Black

The Florida Legislative Black Caucus has called for an impartial investigation into the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin who was “walking while black.”

The Legislative Black Caucus issued the following statement:

Today the Florida Legislative Black Caucus asked United States Attorney General Eric Holder to apply the full force of the Justice Department and intervene in the Sanford, FL shooting death of an unarmed black youth Trayvon Martin by a self-appointed “neighborhood watch captain.”

The failure of local police to arrest and properly charge the confessed shooter in the death of Martin, a scholar athlete who was visiting relatives in their gated community in Sanford, FL, and committed the heinous crime of “Walking While Black”, has touched off a firestorm of controversy.

Rep. Mia Jones, Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus also urged the Governor Scott to do all within his power to ensure that justice is served in this coldblooded killing of Trayvon Martin, which took place over three weeks ago, on February 26, 2012.  “We cannot stand by and allow this to go unaddressed.  Trayvon’s life had too much value to just allow it to be ignored.
