United Arts of Central Florida awarded $32,099 to 11 emerging artists, 9 established artists and 4 arts administrators selected as recipients of its 2012 Artist Development Grants & Arts Administrator Grants. Formerly named the Professional Development Grants, this program funds artistic projects and learning opportunities that strengthen artistic excellence and administrative expertise in Central Florida. United Arts received 45 eligible applications with requests totaling $68,350. Since the inception of the program in 2003, United Arts has awarded a total of $314,401 in professional development support.
The eligibility criteria for artists were expanded this year, and new sub-categories were defined: emerging artists who have pursued their art form professionally for 2 or more years, and established artists who have achieved significant recognition in their field. Funding was split evenly in number of grants, to the highest-scoring applications in each artist category. “Many worthy projects will not be funded,” said Mary Patrick Giraulo, grants & arts education manager. “But more emerging artists have a shot, and established artists receive larger awards for more complex projects.”
Emerging artists may request up to $1,000, established artists up to $2,500, and arts administrators up to $500. Requests are capped at 75% of artists’ budgets and 50% of administrators’ budgets. The application is simple compared to many grant programs, including a 2-page narrative, budget, resumé, and work samples.
Applications for Artist Development Grants & Arts Administrator Grants are accepted annually in the fall.
