Emergency Services Unit Teams Up to Lend Helping Hand

OPD, Home Depot and others join together to install new fence at Milton McKnight's home on September 10, 2011

The Orlando Police Department’s Emergency Services Unit along with members of several organizations teamed up to lend more than a helping hand.

This group of dedicated individuals took time out of their busy schedules to assist Milton McKnight re-secure his property, by installing a wooden fence and enhancing his landscaping. Milton’s fence was blown down during one of the recent storms over the summer. Milton is wheel chair bound and is in constant need of support. Without the fence, Milton had no way to secure his property, which allowed trespassers to walk onto and through his property. Milton also has pets that could not be let into the back yard because these was no fence.

The project started when Paul Kennedy of FOX Sports approached Captain Robert Pigman of the Orlando Police Department, in August of 2011. Kennedy advised Captain Pigman of the deterioration on Milton’s property. While Pigman was in Home Depot getting a supply list for the materials needed for the project, he was approached by Kurt Walker, Regional Manager for Home Depot. Pigman explained what the list of materials was for and immediately, Walker offered to provide the materials for the project from Home Depot.

On September 10, not only did Home Depot supply the materials, they also delivered the materials and sent a team of volunteers to assist with the project. Once the project was complete, Milton had a new fence installed, new landscaping and had his windows caulked.
