Scott Bails Out Courts with Emergency Loan

Governor Rick Scott gave the okay for an emergency loan of $45 million to the state court system from the state treasury, to help keep the courts running through March 2012. But he said that the loan must be repaid by mid-2012, after the Legislature had had time to work out a solution to the court funding problem.

With a slowdown in foreclosure cases, Florida’s courts are struggling.

The state courts are funded primarily through court filing fees, the majority of which come from foreclosures. But when lawsuits caused many banks to freeze or slowdown foreclosure processing, it led to a $108 million shortfall this fiscal year.

This is the second loan the state courts have asked for this fiscal year.
