Randolph Files Bill to Ban Sexual Orientation Discrimination

Rep. Scott Randolph (D-Orlando)

Representative Scott Randolph (D-Orlando) introduced legislation Tuesday, designed to attract more businesses, jobs and families to Florida. The Competitive Workforce Act (H.B. 247) would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. These same protections would extend to public accommodations and housing.

“It is unimaginable that in this day in age, Florida law still allows businesses to fire their employees simply for being who they are,” said Randolph in a statement. “Not only is it wrong, but it also sends a terrible message to a community that has made invaluable contributions to our society, our culture, and our everyday lives. It’s even more important during these challenging economic times that we do not let the fear of discrimination prevent anyone from bringing their business, their family, or their talents to our state.”

Over 55 percent of Floridians currently live in municipalities where these important workplace protections exist because of the actions taken by local governments. Passing the Competitive Workforce Act would simplify the patchwork of local ordinances by making fair employment the rule across Florida, Randolph added.

The Senate version of the bill, SB 340 is being sponsored by Senator Nan Rich (D-Weston).

As of 2010, 87 percent of Fortune 500 companies already prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.
