Police: Masked Men Rob Motel on American Way

Kevin M. Johnson - robbery suspect

Orlando police have arrested a suspect, one of three men accused of a commercial robbery of a motel on American Way on Monday night.

A clerk at the Lord Inn located at 5859 American Way, told investigators three masked men wearing dark clothes came through the motel front door around 10:30 p.m. He told police, one of suspects pointed a black handgun at his face saying he would shoot, if he did not hand over money from the drawer. The clerk placed the drawer on the counter and one of the suspects took the money from the cash register, before they all fled the motel.

An Orange County Chase helicopter searched the area, along with a K-9 that tracked one of the suspects to the nearby Hampton Court Inn.

Kevin M. Johnson, 21 years, was apprehended by a K-9, but not before receiving a dog bite. He was taken to Florida South Hospital for treatment and released.

According to the Arrest Report, “Johnson bent over at the waist while he was walking between parked vehicles and a hedgerow…It appeared that Johsnon was moving in a manner that is consistent with a person trying to conceal himself.” The report added, “…based on the severity of this incident and believing that Johnson could be armed, (the officer) released K-9 Watt onto Johnson as Johnson had concealed himself in the hedgerow.”

A grey colored shirt, green shorts, a black hat and a camouflage mask were found in the area, but “neither money nor guns were recovered from Johnson,” the report states.

Johnson has been charged with robbery with a firearm wearing a mask, aggravated assault with a firearm and resisting an officer without violence. He was booked in the Orange County Jail on a $5,300 bond, around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police are still searching for the other two suspects.
