OPD Announces “Kicks 4 Guns” Campaign

Orlando Police Department announced its 13th annual “Kicks for Guns” campaign which will be held on August 19, 2011, at the Orlando Baptist Church, 500 S. Semoran Boulevard, Orlando, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The primary purpose of “Kicks for Guns” is to get guns out of the hands of young kids. Citizens can exchange an unloaded firearm for a pair of tennis shoes or a $50.00 gift card.

Real Radio 104.1, along with many other businesses, including the Orlando Police Department is sponsoring this event. The Orlando Police Department first partnered with REAL Radio, in 2001, to start the Kick 4 Guns campaign.

There will be multiple locations throughout the different cities and counties in Central Florida, along with a host of other law enforcement agencies participating in this event. Over the past three years the locations have steadily increased.

In 2009, there were 7 locations and 1090 firearms were collected.  In 2010, 9 locations collected 1356 firearms in 12 hours.  Of the firearms collected, 45 were sawed off shotguns and 7 stolen guns turned in.

During the campaign anyone can turn in a gun anonymously with no questions asked.

All Guns must be unloaded and placed in either a bag or a case.  A range officer will be present to assist anyone who has a problem unloading their gun.
