Florida Education Association Plans Second Lawsuit

The Florida Education Association is planning a second lawsuit over legislation passed this year by the Republican-dominated Florida Legislature.

The first lawsuit was filed by the teacher’s union and other union groups in June and accused the state of violating the constitution by requiring Florida Retirement System enrollees to contribute 3 percent of their paychecks toward their retirement plans.

It was not immediately clear what this second lawsuit was about, though the association has hinted that it is examining legal challenges to teacher merit pay, the “Blaine amendment” repeal that allows state dollars to go toward religious institutions, reductions in school funding and changes to class size requirements.

The FEA plans a Wednesday press conference to reveal more details.
