A controversial state law which makes it illegal for government agencies to make photographs or recordings of a death public, will face its first test, with the death on Sunday of an 18-year-old all caught on tape.
The state Department of Juvenile Justice administrators have on video tape the last moments of Eric Perez as he died at the West Palm Beach juvenile detention center.
Perez died at the lockup just after 8:00 a.m. Sunday, several hours after he was moved from Port St. Lucie to a dining room where he could be monitored, after he fell ill.
According to the Miami Herald, Juvenile Justice officials would not confirm the name of the youth who died, but Perez’ mother did so in a telephone conversation.
Two lockup workers have since been fired and four others have been suspended, the Miami Herald reports.
