A complaint has been filed with The Florida Bar accusing Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown of illegally posing as an attorney because some federal campaign reports dealing with donations from Brown incorrectly list him as an attorney, according to The Florida Times-Union.
Private investigator David Hodges highlighted 16 donations Brown made to causes including the Florida Democratic Party and the presidential campaign of then-U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton.
Brown spokesman Abel Harding told the paper that mistakes on Brown’s line of work was made by those who received the donations, not the mayor.
“Any previous campaign contribution that identified him as an attorney were clearly mistakes on the part of the candidates or parties reporting the contribution,” Harding told the T-U.
A spokeswoman from the Federal Election Commission told the paper that campaigns are responsible for looking over the information about contributors, but Florida Democratic Party Treasurer Alma Gonzalez said the information the party submits comes from donors.
