A group of rivals is turning up the heat on Gov. Rick Scott, urging him not to sign a controversial elections measure which usurps the rights of voters and suppresses voter participation.
The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) is asking voters to fill our a form “to demand that Governor Scott not sign this bill into law.”
Opponents have assailed the measure (HB 1355) which reduces early voting from 15 to 7 days, denies existing voters who have moved or changed their name, the ability to cast a regular ballot and tightens regulations on third-party voting registration groups, as an attack on President Obama’s electoral coalition ahead of the 2012 elections.
Supporters falsely claim the bill is necessary to secure Florida’s elections from fraud, which is virtually non-existent.
“Governor Rick Scott could sign this bill any day now, so we have to move fast and demand that he veto this blatant affront to voters’ rights,” says the DGA’s form, linked to on the front page of the organization’s website.
Scott has not said whether he will sign the bill, although it is widely expected he will do so. He has until Saturday to act on it.
