Driver Knocks Crossing Guard to the Ground on Rio Grande

An Orange County crossing guard was knocked to the ground on Monday on Rio Grande Avenue, after a careless driver failed to stop while making a right turn onto 29th Street.

Gloria Alvarado, 38, of Orlando, was driving a Dodge Neon on Monday around 9:20 am, and attempting to make a right turn from Rio Grande Avenue, going eastbound on 29th Street.

Troopers said that Alice Hill, 79 years, a school crossing guard had just stepped into the eastbound lanes of 29th Street to stop traffic to cross children.  With stop sign in hand Hill stepped into the crossing, while Alvarado made the turn and the side mirror of her vehicle struck Hill, knocking her to the ground.

Hill was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

Alvarado was charged with careless driving.  Troopers said that Hill, the Crossing Guard had the right of way and Alvarado is required stop.
