Although on Day 46, BP is now managing to capture some oil, a small fraction of the estimated 12,000 to 19,000 barrels a day flowing into the gulf, so much crude has already gushed from the leaking well that several beaches in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida could be spoilt, as clean up is likely to take a very long time.
