Two Tampa Police officers narrowly escaped injury earlier this month after being fired upon. The suspect was arrested.
Just after 10:00am on February 4th, a Tampa Police Detective with 21 years of service and a Tampa Police Corporal with 9 years of service were conducting follow-up investigations on an unrelated robbery at the Azula North Apartments, located at 4939 E. Busch Blvd. While in the complex parking lot, they observed 23-year-old Matthew Fowler, trying to enter vehicles and apartment doors.
During an attempt to identify Fowler, a struggle ensued, and he drew a Glock 9mm handgun with an extended 30-round magazine and fired on the officers.
Fortunately, neither officer was struck by the shots.
One officer returned fire, but Fowler was able to flee on foot. A perimeter was quickly established, and Fowler was apprehended a short time later near N. 50th St and Temple Heights Rd. His gun was recovered from a nearby dumpster, according to law enforcement. Fowler was transported to Orient Road Jail.
Fowler, a convicted felon with an extensive and violent criminal record, has been charged with Two Counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer; Two Counts of Resisting an Officer with Violence; Carrying a Concealed Firearm; Felon in Possession of a Weapon; Tampering with Physical Evidence; and Loitering or Prowling.
“Every officer who wears the badge understands the inherent dangers of this profession, yet they selflessly answer the call to protect our community,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. “These officers, already engaged in an active investigation, demonstrated their dedication by proactively addressing criminal activity. Their actions, which placed them directly in harm’s way, undoubtedly contributed to the safety of our residents. We are incredibly grateful that our officers were not injured, and we are now focused on ensuring justice is served.”
The Tampa Police Department released body-worn camera video footage of the officer-involved shooting that took place on February 4, 2025.
The involved officers were placed on administrative leave, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the officer-involved shooting aspect of the incident, both actions consistent with established Tampa Police Department policies. The officers, who thankfully were not injured, are Detective Amy Jones (21 years with Tampa Police Department) and Corporal Kaitlyn Ford (9 years with Tampa Police Department), who returned fire.
