Orange County Bicentennial Celebration for 200th Anniversary

Orange County is hosting a Bicentennial Celebration for the 200th anniversary and residents can explore this rich history with a free event.

The Orange County Regional History Center will have free admission on Sunday, December 29th from 12pm to 5pm, open to residents and holiday visitors alike.

Orange County Bicentennial 200th Anniversary Mosquito CountyOrange County, once known as Mosquito County, was established on December 29, 1824. The county seat was and still is Orlando today.

Mosquito County was the original name for a vast county that encompassed much of eastern Florida. Its territory included what are now Volusia, Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, Marion, Martin, Seminole, Osceola, Orange, Lake, Polk, and Palm Beach counties.

“The 20th century ushered in a period of monumental growth for Orange County,” said Mayor Jerry Demings. “The beginning development of Walt Disney World in 1964 transformed the region into a global tourist destination. Today, Orange County thrives as a center of tourism, commerce, and culture while still preserving its historical heritage. For a county that has been around for 200 years, it has not been without its challenges. However, due to the resilience and strength of the community, we continue to strive to meet the needs of all residents.”

The free Central Florida history event offers fun for all ages, with complimentary all-day admission to Orange County Regional History Center. The day hopes to honor our shared past and bright future.

“I hope you enjoy this 200th Anniversary edition as we highlight the many monumental events that helped shape Orange County and our local community,” said Mayor Jerry Demings.
