Grand Jury Returns Indictment Against 17-Year-Old in Orlando Mass Shooting

A grand jury returned an 11-count indictment against a 17-year-old for shooting multiple people in the middle of downtown Orlando while they were out celebrating Halloween.




An Orange County grand jury formally indicted 17-year-old Jaylen Edgar for two counts of First Degree Murder with a Firearm, seven counts of Attempted First Degree Murder with a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Minor and Culpable Negligence with Personal Injury.

According to law enforcement, in the early morning hours of November 1st, Edgar opened fire into a massive crowd of thousands of people who were out celebrating Halloween in Orlando.

He shot nine people, killing two, 25-year-old Tyrek Hill and 19-year-old Timothy Schmidt Jr. Another woman was injured when she was trampled on while running for safety.

Orlando Police Department officers quickly identified Edgar as the shooter and apprehended him on the scene.

The State Attorney’s office presented sufficient evidence to a grand jury to secure an indictment against Edgar for two counts of First Degree Murder with a Firearm, seven counts of Attempted First Degree Murder with a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Minor and Culpable Negligence with Personal Injury.

The State Attorney’s Office for the Ninth Judicial Circuit previously announced the 17-year-old suspect arrested in the November 1st mass shooting in downtown Orlando is being charged as an adult in this Central Florida case.
