Central Florida Sergeant Arrested on Domestic Battery Charge

Deputies arrested a Central Florida Sheriff’s sergeant on a charge of domestic battery.

34-year-old Volusia Sheriff’s Office sergeant Cody Cochran was arrested in Deltona following an altercation with his spouse.

Deputies responded to a 911 call around 10:21am indicating that the couple were involved in a physical fight. Deputies interviewed a witness who stated Cochran struck the victim in her face during the altercation.

Although the victim reported no injuries and indicated she did not wish to pursue criminal charges, deputies determined Cochran was the primary aggressor in the incident and placed him under arrest.

“Domestic violence should not be accepted in our society, and it won’t be tolerated in our organization,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said following the arrest. “While I’m glad the victim in this case wasn’t injured, there’s no excuse for domestic violence – especially not for a law enforcement officer sworn to uphold the law.”

Cochran was hired at the Sheriff’s Office in 2011. Cochran previously headed the Volusia Sheriff’s Crime Suppression Team and was named Officer of the Year.

He was already on suspension pending the outcome of two internal affairs investigations unrelated to the latest incident.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office said it had already begun the process of termination of his employment.

According to local law enforcement, he was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond pending first appearance.
