Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) surprise decision to not seek re-election this November opens a huge opportunity for the GOP, says Republican strategist Jack Burkman.
“This will hand Republicans a victory,” says the Republican strategist Burkman.
Bayh had been polling well ahead of former GOP Sen. Dan Coats who had planned to challenge Bayh in November. Some estimates showed Bayh up by as much as 20-points.
“After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so in Congress has waned,” he told the “Indianapolis Star.”
He said that he was confident that he would have been re-elected but the partisanship in Washington had gotten to him.
“This is a great opportunity for the GOP to pick up another seat at a time when Democrats find themselves struggling to hold on to Senate seats in competitive races,” says Burkman.
