Schools in a Race to Catch up, Showcase Science Projects

On Monday, February 15th, Rollins College will host the annual Dr. Nelson Ying Orange County Science Exposition. The event showcases science research from the best and brightest middle and high school students in the area. Recent studies show that American 15-year-olds now rank 21st in science and 25th in math when compared to their peers around the world. The 300 students competing in 13 different categories at the 50th anniversary of the Orange County Science Fair hope to prove this statistic wrong.

This year, some projects like “To Carp or Not to Carp” focus on timely environmental topics like exploring the impact of carp, a type of fish that control algae growth in lakes, replacing the use of harmful chemicals. Other high-level topics include:

Using Both Radiation and Chemotherapy to Treat Head and Neck Cancer

The Effect of Carbon Dioxide on the Growth of Bacteria
