Traffic Stop Leads to Deadly Crash and Arrest

A man who ran a red light after failing to stop when police officers initiated a traffic stop, crashed his car into another vehicle, killing the driver.

Orlando Police Department (OPD) have in their custody, Kenny Zarzuela, 24 years, who ran a red light at SR 436 and Curry Ford Road, around 11:45 pm, on January 18th, killing Spencer George Owens, 43 years, after crashing into the latter’s vehicle.

Police had tried to stop Zarzuela who was traveling south on SR 436 around Grant Street, by activating their emergency lights and siren.  Zarzuelz who was driving erratically refused to stop, continuing on and running the red light at SR 436 and Curry Ford Road.  The Orlando Police Officers had turned off their lights and sirens and was in the process of making a u-turn at the median break north of the intersection when the crash occurred.

Owens was transported to Florida Hospital East where he died as a result of his injuries.

Zarzuela was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.  He was arrested transported to the Orange County Jail on non-traffic related charges.  Traffic charges are pending.

Police are continuing with their investigation and trying to determine whether drugs played a role in Zarzuela’s car crash.
