A massive earthquake rocked the island of Haiti around 5:15 pm today. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0 and struck about 15 miles from the capital city, Port-au-Prince.
Reports are that a hospital has collapsed and cries could be heard for help. There are reports too of wide-spread devastation.
Haiti’s Ambassador to the United States in a phone conversation with CNN described the situation as a “catastrophe of major proportions.” The Ambassador has appealed to the United States and other members of the international community for assistance.
Meanwhile, it is being reported that there was an after shock that registered 5.9.
A Tsunami watch is in effect for Haiti, Cuba, The Bahamas and the Dominican Republic.
