Nine OC Sheriff’s Deputies Re-assigned After Shooting

Torey Breedlove, the man who rammed Orange County Sheriff’s deputies with his stolen vehicle on January 5th, was shot at by nine officers in a hail of 100 bullets.

The shooting, which took place at the Alta Westgate Apartment Complex at 6830 Alta Westgate Drive, left Breedlove, 27, dead, after he rammed deputies with his vehicle, while trying to escape.

The nine officers involved in the shooting have been reassigned to non-enforcement related duty for a minimum period of one week, pending completion of the investigation.   They are:

Rafael Cruz
Jason Gorberg
John Leone
Jason Popovich
Randall Root
Richard Schmeltzer
Troy Tiegs
Paul Volkerson

Before their re-assignment, the deputies were assigned to auto trap and auto theft within OSCO.

With the exception of two deputies, all others were hired by OCSO before 2000.
