The Colonial High School FFA won the state championship in the state FFA Environmental Science Contest held at the University of Florida, North Florida Education Research Center in Live Oak, Florida. After beating 12 teams statewide, the Colonial FFA team will now represent the state of Florida at the National FFA Environmental Science Contest in Indianapolis, Indiana in October 2010.
The Colonial team consisted of seven students, four of whom competed in various components of environmental science issues. Some of the components the teams had to analyze and identify include:
· water pollutants and contaminants
· potential causes of the non-point source of pollution
· best management practices that could be used in correcting the problem
· funding sources for the solution
The teams also had to identify:
· 145 wildlife animals
· environmental science tools
· invasive plant and animal species
During the competition, the teams presented an oral presentation and took a 50 question test on wildlife, run-off pollution, biotic systems, food webs, soil and water quality, wildlife habitats and forestry practices.
