Countries of the Caribbean Community, in honor of CARICOM-Cuba Day on December 8th, pledged their continuing support to work towards Cuba’s full integration into the Hemisphere.
In assuring their support, representatives from both CARICOM and Cuba recalled the historic stand taken by four independent states in 1972 to establish diplomatic relations with Cuba, in the context of a hostile environment.
Guyana’s Foreign Minister, Honorable Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, in a statement made particular reference to the “courageous and historic” stand which the Caricom countries of Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago had taken in forging relations with Cuba and which was subsequently adopted by the rest of the Community.
H.E. Excellency, Raul Gortazar Marrero, Cuba’s Ambassador to CARICOM also referred to the courageous stand of the “four small, newly independent” CARICOM countries that first established ties with Cuba.
Caribbean countries have received substantial support from Cuba particularly in the areas of health, sports and disaster management, under the CARICOM-Cuba Joint Commission established to promote social, cultural, trade and economic development.
