Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law 2020 graduate Lukens Rivil is looking forward to sharing this graduation day and the success it symbolizes with his greatest inspiration – his mother and father. Rivil’s parents are both educators in Palm Beach County who are looking forward to watching FAMU’s virtual graduation on Saturday, May 9th due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“They made tremendous sacrifices by leaving Haiti and coming to America for a better life,” said Rivil. “One month before my 10th birthday my parents were able to bring me to America which reunited our family. They are both amazing individuals who gave me all the nurturing, love and affection needed to become the man I am today. They have always instilled in me that education is the key to success, and I have never taken that for granted.”
Rivil also dedicates his accomplishment to his late uncle Duteau Meus.
“I was extremely close to my uncle who died at a very young age in 2014,” said Rivil, a native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. “I wish that he was here today to watch me accomplish such a major milestone in my life. However, I know he will always be with me in spirit.”
Rivil participated in numerous organizations and made strong friendships that will last beyond law school. During his time at FAMU Law in downtown Orlando, Rivil served as graduate senator in FAMU’s 49th Senate, was treasurer for Caribbean Law Student Association, treasurer for the International Law Student Association (ILSA), and a member of the Mock Trial Team. He also volunteered at NewCity Parramore Avenue, a religious community outreach near the law school.
Rivil calls graduating from FAMU Law a dream come true. Not even COVID-19 can change that.
“Since I was a child, I have always had a desire and passion to help those who can’t help themselves,” Rivil said. “As an officer of the court, I want to be the best asset that I can be to my community and help in any way that I can. I’m looking forward to passing the Florida Bar and practicing law.”
