Boy, 10, shot by stray bullet, gunman on the run

A 10-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen on Thursday night and the hunt is on for the suspected shooter, Sanford police said.

An argument between Daquan Butts, 21, the suspected gunman, and another man near the intersection of W. 13th Place and Oleander, led to Butts opening fire.  The man was shot in the butt and taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center.

But, the 10-year-old boy, who was riding his bicycle nearby, was shot in the abdomen.  He was airlifted to Winnie Palmer Hospital where he underwent surgery, successfully, police said.

The boy, who has not been identified, is a student at the Idyllwilde Elementary School.

Meanwhile, Daquan Butts, the suspected shooter is on the run.  Police believe he is traveling in an unknown vehicle and is armed and dangerous.

“Daquan Butts demonstrated a reckless disregard for human life when he pulled out a firearm and randomly shot, injuring an innocent child.  The community should be outraged by such careless disregard for life, “said Chief Cecil Smith.
