Orange County School District to serve over 650,000 Free Summer Meals to Kids, Teens

meal2Orange County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services will offer meals at no charge to all children 18 years and younger, starting June 9.

This is Orange County Public Schools seventh year as a summer nutrition sponsor. The district anticipates serving more than 650,000 nutritionally-balanced meals to children at approximately 225 locations. Community sponsors include the Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA Youth Camps, Orlando City Recreation, and schools with summer academic programs. The program is funded by the USDA and the Florida Department of Agriculture. The school district operates the program to keep children healthy over the summer, so they are ready for school in the fall. More than 65 percent of Orange County students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

The lunch menu will include fresh produce, homemade sandwiches, wraps, salads, and milk. Breakfast and snacks are also available from the program.

Any program supervising children is encouraged to contact the OCPS Food and Nutrition Services Department to receive summer meals. Meals will be conveniently distributed from a food bus, which will follow an assigned route to serve communities without a program.
