Operation Lock It Up: Public urged to secure vehicles, homes

lockfinalOn Wednesday, Orlando police continued to remind the public to keep their vehicles locked and homes secured so, as to reduce the chances of becoming victims to residential and vehicle burglaries.

With the view to educating the public, on February 25, OPD launched Operation Lock It Up, part of which entails police officers walking throughout local neighborhoods to check vehicles and residences, as possible targets for criminals. Police also leave behind information for residents which provide safety tips on how to keep their homes and vehicles protected against crimes of opportunity.

Today alone, OPD reported that some 76 unlocked vehicles were identified and six homes were found unsecured.

The public is reminded of the following vehicle safety tips:

  • Ensure doors are locked
  • Fully close all car windows
  • Do not leave valuables in plain sight

For residences, citizens should:

  • Make sure garage doors, windows and entry/exit doors are closed and locked
  • Utilize outdoor lighting to illuminate all entrances
  • Keep plants trimmed so a burglar cannot hide near windows and doors
