4% pay cut, too severe, says key Florida lawmaker

By Bill Cotterell

The chairman of the Senate’s budget committee said today a House proposal for cutting most state employee salaries by 4 percent is too severe. But he conceded that a pay cut will probably have to hit mid-range employees as Florida lawmakers deal with an unprecedented budget shortage.

“When you make $30,000 a year it’s pretty challenging to say you’ve got to take $1,500 out of your paycheck,” said Sen. J.D. Alexander, R-Winter Haven, who heads the Senate Ways and Means Policy Council. “It’s one thing to ask someone who makes $100,000 a year or more to take a percent or two. It’s a whole different thing to ask someone who makes $30,000 a year.”

  1. State employed nurses are currently working at 2/3 the the pay rate of local hospital rates. Charlie Crist denied these nurses a pay raise back in 2007. Now they are being targeted for a reduction in their pay. Outrageous!!!
