A 35-year-old grandmother in Arizona is now behind bars, charged in the death of her 3-year-old grandson, who shot himself in the face with her handgun.
Rachael B. Spry, of Yuma, Arizona was charged with reckless manslaughter, possession of a dangerous drug, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession or use of a weapon in a drug offense, according to Yuma Sun, rawstory.com reported.
Spry’s 3-year-old grandson, Darrien Nez, was pronounced dead at the Yuma Regional Medical Center, after the toddler found the 9mm his grandmother placed in her backpack. Also in the backpack was a methamphetamine pipe.
Spry admitted to using the drug prior to Darrien fatally shooting himself, according to news reports. A judge ignored Spry’s plea for leniency and bond was set at $500,000.
What a mess. 35 year Grandma means that the average parent of the three-year-old for two generations was 16. And the AZ legislature condemns any background checks and advocates for more guns. I ain’t visiting Phoenix soon.
