As the Friday mid-night deadline looms there is growing pessimism that a budget deal will be struck and a government shutdown averted.
Despite the claims that neither side–Democrats and Republicans–do not want a government shutdown, tea-partiers are gunning for it, unless all their demands are met.
A new Wall Street/NBC News poll finds that, 68 percent of tea-partiers and 56 percent of Republicans want the GOP to not compromise on budget talks, even if it means shutting down the government. Sixty-six (66 percent) of independents say Republicans should compromise in order to prevent a government shutdown.
Here are 11 negative consequences if a shutdown did occur:
- Disease will go unchecked
- Travelers will be stranded
- Military troops will fight without pay
- Congress will still get paid
- Government contractors will be lockout out of their offices
EXTRA: The Obama administration warned that a government shutdown could furlough over 800,000 federal workers, interrupt military pay, and slow tax refunds. The number of government employees affected “would be similar to the number affected in 1995 and 1996, the last time the government shut down.”
