Whoa! Floridians Brace for More Pain

With no attempt to broaden Florida’s tax base or modernize its tax code, House Speaker Dean Cannon (R-Winter Park) said Monday, he expects that “worthy” programs will be cut in the upcoming budget.

“I think worthy programs will have to take reductions,” Cannon told a group of reporters, the News Service of Florida reported.

Cannon added that, he believed it was possible to pass a budget by March 9, when the session is slated to end, through the matter of redistricting, undertaken once every ten years, looms large on the agenda.

Cannon said he didn’t expect Florida’s budget outlook to improve in the short term and saw no reason for delaying its passage.

“I’ve seen no indication it’s likely to become rosier by delay,” he said.
