The high pollen counts from last week are continuing this week, and are the likely culprit for What’s Going Around – Allergic Conjunctivitis (pink eye), Florida Hospital Centra Care said today in a statement. The good news is, unlike conjunctivitis caused by a virus or bacteria, allergic conjunctivitis isn’t contagious.
Incidences of conjunctivitis are up at many of the 18 Centra Care locations. The highest areas of increase have been at the Centra Care centers in these areas:
Kissimmee and Longwood – over 500% increase
Oviedo – 267% increase
Azalea Park, Conway, and Winter Garden Village – nearly double
“Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva,” Florida Hospital Centra Care said in a statement. “The conjunctiva is a thin film that covers the inside of your eyelids and the whites of your eyes. As previously mentioned, allergic conjunctivitis is caused by allergens such as pollen. Other allergens include perfume, dander, cosmetics, smoke and air pollution.”
Symptoms include:
· Redness in the whites of the eye
· Red and swollen eyelids
· Tearing
· Intense itching or burning
· Eye discharge
· Usually both eyes are affected
Prevention for allergic conjunctivitis is an obvious, but not often practical solution – avoid the allergen. This is sometimes impossible. If you suspect your conjunctivitis is caused by an allergen, cold compresses and over-the counter antihistamines may help to bring relief at home. If this doesn’t help, a doctor can prescribe medication to bring you relief from the symptoms including:
* Antihistamine or anti-inflammatory drops that are placed into the eye
* Prescription strength oral antihistamine medications
