New Farmers’ Market Open in an Orlando Food Desert

There’s now an organic farmers’ market – on an actual farm – in one of Orlando’s food deserts. And Zion Farms & Market is delivering more than fresh produce to the community, as it also launches an agriculture education program aimed at urban youth. It is already becoming an icon in the Apopka community.

Zion Farms & Market, located at 423 East Keene Rd., Apopka, FL 32703, now hosts a bi-weekly Farmers’ Market in addition to launching the agriculture education program. This Saturday, for instance, you can purchase fresh organic ingredients including jalapenos, bell peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, scallion and more. The farmers’ market takes place every first and third Saturday from 9am to 2pm.

At the bi-weekly farmers’ market, visitors can enjoy:

  • Archery Practice
  • Picking your fruits and vegetables straight from the source
  • Food trucks
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • Local Vendors selling, crafts, spices, organic products, etc.

The main goal of the non-profit is enriching lives of youth by providing personalized guidance in the areas of leadership, team building and personal development through comprehensive farming and archery programs, while providing nutritional education and economic bridges within the greater Orlando area.

The farming program is “a way for our urban youth to get close to nature in a way they likely have not experienced before,” the organization says. The program will engage urban youth in lessons about basic agriculture education, environmental protection and sustainability. Zion Farms & Market says completing tasks necessary to build and maintain a small farm teaches students the value of hard work and a host of transferable life skills.

The next farmers’ market at Zion Farms & Market is Saturday, May 5th, 2018 from 9:00 AM 2:00 PM. After that, the farmers’ market will take place on May 19th.
