Orlando City Commissioner Daisy Lynum has always gone along to get along. Commissioner Lynum, who was first elected to this seat all the way back in 1998, is coming up for another re-election on April 8, 2014. The controversial Lynum has already attracted two challengers who are working hard to deliver a new voice for the community.
Regina Hill and Cynthia Harris are already making waves and shaping up to be formidable opponents.
Regina Hill grew up in the heart of Parramore and is running because she understand the struggles of the of the residents of District 5. “District 5 is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Central Florida with a rich history and a strong sense of community,” Hill said. “Yet in many ways, we have not grown and prospered at the same rate as other districts. Our children need quality childcare, schools and programs. Our young adults need jobs and affordable housing. Small business owners need economic support and most importantly, our elderly need better healthcare, housing and transportation.”
Cynthia Harris is a former Law Enforcement Official and former AFSCME shop steward who is committed to serve the people with transparency, strength and vision. Harris recently took the City Council to task when they proposed 21% pay raises for the Mayor and themselves. “The decision to serve the public in a Public Service role, by design, should be more about sacrifice than self.”
Since Lynum was elected, much of her district has continued to suffer. She has been known for her outlandish statements Once at City Council, Lynum actually said on video about historic Parramore: “It will not be minority for long. We’re going to guarantee that.”
“Our city council needs a fresh approach and commissioners who are committed to civility and common sense,” says Harris.
“The only way to get change we need is through new and innovative leadership,” Hill said. “That’s why I am running to be your next City Commissioner from Orlando’s 5th District.” Hill is also opening her campaign office at 916 S. Ivey Lane.
