Deputies: Murder Case Cracked After 16 Years

Tommy Smith – victim

After 16 years, Polk County deputies say, they are about to make an arrest of a suspect in a 1996 cold case homicide.

37-year-old Tommy Eugene Smith’s body was discovered during the early evening hours of Frida, October, 11, 1996 at the edge of a citrus grove off Edison Road, near Auburndale.

Smith, who hailed from Bartow, up until his death, was a nursing supervisor at Lakeland Regional Medical Center and had previously been employed at Winter Haven and Bartow Hospitals.

An autopsy confirmed that Smith had been shot and was the victim of foul play.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd will provide details on the arrest and the homicide investigation later today.
