City Year Orlando Kicks Off Inaugural Service Year in Local Schools

Mayor Theresa Jacobs, Mayor Buddy Dyer, Superintendent Barbara Jenkins and others will join City Year Orlando on Friday as they kick off their founding year of service in Orange County Public Schools. City Year, an education-focused, nonprofit that unites diverse teams of young adults for a year of full-time service in the nation’s highest-need schools, will serve in five schools this year: Evans High School, Meadowbrook Middle School, Memorial Middle School, Oak Ridge High School and Walker Middle School.

City Year Orlando will hold its Inaugural Opening Day Ceremonies at 9:30 AM at Universal CityWalk® – the grooveSMon Friday, October 12, 2012. Comcast NBCUniversal sponsors Opening Day at all 24 City Year locations. City Year Orlando Opening Day is also supported by Universal Orlando®.

City Year partners with schools and teachers to place trained young adults in schools where they’re needed most to provide individual support to students who need extra care and attention. Working side-by-side with teachers, our Corps Members use research-based tools and techniques to help students who are struggling—so more kids stay in school and on track to succeed. Half of our nation’s dropouts come from only 12% of schools.

City Year is focusing its efforts where it can have a major impact on the national dropout rate. Over the next decade, City Year aims to work in the cities that account for two-thirds of the nation’s dropouts. Together, with its partners, City Year will continue to be part of the solution to our country’s education challenges—tapping into the idealism of young people to support educators and putting students on track to succeed.
