Central Florida congressional candidate Todd Long says if the president decides to go to war with Iran over its nuclear ambitions he’d “be all for it,” while his Democratic opponent Alan Grayson says he’d hope to still avoid war, though wouldn’t rule it out if the country becomes a threat to the United States.
During a heated debate before the Tiger Bay Club of Central Florida on Monday in Orlando, both candidates – who interrupted each other and were generally rude to each other during the debate – did have a couple of clear differences on serious policy issues. How to approach Iran was one.
“Talk has failed and we’re running out of time,” Long, a Republican said. “Nothing’s working. So if the president feels it’s time to get something done and actually take out their nuclear weapons, I’ll be all for it.”
Grayson said he would only vote to authorize war Iran becomes a “real, tangible threat,” to the United States and he doesn’t believe that’s the case yet.
“A war with Iran could still be avoided…. I would not vote for that right now. I think it’s possible to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and I would try.”
