Wekiva Parkway is a Game-Changer says Transportation Secretary

The Wekiva Parkway in Central Florida will be a true game-changer for Orlando says Florida Department of Transportation Secretary, Ananth Prasad, after agreement was reached between that agency the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA), earlier this week.

“It (Wekiva Parkway) will be a true game-changer for Orlando and, indeed, the entire Central Florida region,” Prasad said. “It will complete the beltway and will create the conditions for private sector investment, job creation, and economic growth,”

DOT said the project will be broken up into eight sections, six built by DOT, primarily in Lake and Seminole counties.

The expressway authority will build two sections primarily in Orange County.

Funding for the $1.8 billion dollar project will come from FDOT and the Florida Turnpike Enterprise, OOCEA, and the federal government.

The agreement still needs final approval by two transportation planning agencies – MetroPlan Orlando and the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization – as well as the OOCEA board and the Legislature. Pending those approvals, construction is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2012.

The Wekiva Parkway will cover a 26 mile ring around Orlando through Orange, Lake, and Seminole counties.
