State Rep. Alan Williams (D-Tallahassee); the Rev. R.B. Holmes, vice chairman of the Governor Rick Scott’s Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection, along with community and spiritual leaders, today called on Governor Scott to call a special session of the Florida Legislature to review the state’s Stand Your Ground law.

Following a press conference held in Tallahassee, Representative Williams issued the following statement:

“Our prayers continue to go out to the Martin Family as they continue to mourn the death of their son. The Stand Your Ground law is a serious matter that needs to be address for the welfare of Florida citizens. As the chairman of the Florida Legislative Black Caucus, I encourage my colleagues to come together as a legislative body and secure the passage of legislation on the notion that our citizens are now living in fear of a justice system designed to protect them. Changes to these laws are necessary to ensure that we are a society where all citizens are treated equally and to address how unjust the application of our laws can be,” said Rep. Alan Williams.

“In light of the ruling in the Trayvon Martin case, the fight for equal protections and equality under our laws in this state continues on. Members of the Florida Legislature must not let this moment pass us by. I urge the citizens of this state to call upon Governor Scott to call a Special Session to take action now to deal with this crisis in our state. We owe it to our citizens to ensure that this tragedy would not happen again.”
