Texting while Driving Bill Heads to Scott

A bill that would ban texting while driving is on it way to Gov. Rick Scott for signature.

The measure SB 52, passed the Senate Thursday by a 39-1 vote.  Republican Sen. Joe Negron (R-Stuart) was the only lawmaker to vote against the bill.

The House approved the bill earlier this week, with an amendment that allows law enforcement to use drivers’ mobile phone records against them, only in cases where texting leads to a crash that results in death or personal injury.  That change required the bill to go back to the Senate.

Florida would become the 40th state to ban texting while driving, once Scott signs the measure.
