Supreme Court: Obamacare Lives

ObamacaresignfinalIn a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court saved the controversial health care law that will form part of President Barack Obama’s legacy for generations to come.

The ruling means that under the Affordable Care Act, federal tax credits are authorized for eligible Americans living not only in states with their own exchanges but also in the 34 states with federal marketplaces. It also pre-empts a scramble in states that would have had to act to prevent millions from losing health care coverage if subsidies were dropped.

“Five years ago, after nearly a century of talk, decades of trying, a year of bipartisan debate, we finally declared that in America, health care is not a privilege for a few but a right for all,” Mr. Obama said, from the White House. “The Affordable Care Act is here to stay.”

Mr. Obama added that efforts will continue to improve the ACA, including expanding Medicaid in more Republican-run states. “What we are not going to do,” he added, “is unravel what is now woven into the fabric of America.”

Several Republican presidential candidates denounced the Supreme Court’s decision, including Sen. Marco Rubio, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Sen. Lindsay Graham and Carly Fiorina.
