While Orlando police continue to struggle finding witnesses willing to come forward, it appears there has been gang retaliation in the aftermath of the April 16th drive-by shooting that took the lives of Gino Nicolas and Tanya Skeen. Daquan Lundy and Eric Griffin were arrested for a shooting being labeled as an act of revenge by local authorities. Lundy and Griffin were charged with attempted murder.
According to the incident report, Lundy and Griffin waited at the Bala Sands complex for Treavor Glover to arrive before shooting him in the forehead. Glover survived the shooting. “Lundy fired an unknown amount of rounds at Mr. Glover as he was running,” the report said. “Their intent was to kill him as retaliation for the shooting.” Griffin fired four rounds at close range, with one round striking Glover’s forehead, according to authorities.
Lundy, reportedly a member of at least one local gang, allegedly shot one of the suspects in the April 16th drive-by shooting. According to reports, Lundy had previously made known his intentions on social media to avenge Gino Nicolas’ death. He apparently convinced Griffin, Nicolas’ best and closest friend, to participate in the revenge attack despite Griffin having played in the NBA Development League.
“I can tell you in my 22 years of living in Orlando, I have not [seen] the level of gross depravity for human life in the black community that I have witness over the past six months,” wrote Ezell Harris Jr., Director of Floridians Monitoring Law Enforcement, in a letter to Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs. Harris also ripped the City of Orlando’s out-of-place priorities and lack of real solutions for the community in addressing the violence. “And what is Orlando City Hall doing to address this crime wave? Mayor Buddy Dyer and commissioners Hill, Sheehan, and Stuart solution is to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. What a shame!”
The fact that people actively involved or at least associated with local gangs have demonstrated they are willing to kill with little regard for police or victims is startling in the City Beautiful. Orlando officials need to make sure this senseless violence and gang retaliation does not spiral out of control.
